Nigeria’s Lassa fever outbreak has continued to worsen, with the number of confirmed deaths rising to 258 and the case fatality rate reaching about 24 per cent.
According to the latest report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 18 new confirmed cases were recorded during epidemiological week 35, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in 2026 to 1,074. The infections have been reported across 24 states.
The latest figures show that Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern, with health authorities continuing surveillance and response activities across affected states.
The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents. Person-to-person transmission can also occur, particularly in healthcare settings where infection-prevention measures are inadequate.
Tripod Times reports that health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak and coordinate response efforts as new cases are recorded across the country.
