Former President Koroma Returns to Sierra Leone as Treason Charges Dropped

FREETOWN – Cheers, singing, and a massive security presence filled the streets of Freetown on Sunday as former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma landed back in the country following months of political exile in Nigeria.

Tripod Times reports that his sudden return marks the dramatic conclusion to a high-stakes political saga that kept the West African nation on edge for nearly two years. Government officials confirmed that all treason charges against the former leader have been officially dropped in the interest of national reconciliation.

The Road to Exile

The legal battle began following the civil unrest of November 2023, which the current administration classified as an attempted coup. President Koroma was subsequently placed under house arrest and charged with treason.

However, following a diplomatic intervention brokered by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Koroma was allowed to travel to Nigeria in early 2024, ostensibly for medical treatment.

Political analysts, however, widely understood the move to be a politically engineered exile meant to defuse mounting regional tensions.

A Divided Reaction

Outside the airport, crowds of supporters dressed in the red colors of Koroma’s political party, the All People’s Congress (APC), gathered to catch a glimpse of the former president. “Our leader is home, and justice has finally prevailed,” said Aminata Sesay, a local shop owner who closed her business for the day to witness his arrival. “This is a great day for peace in Sierra Leone.

“Not everyone shares the celebration, however. Critics and some civil society groups have expressed concern that dropping the charges compromises accountability for the lives lost during the 2023 unrest.

As Koroma settles back into his home in Freetown, the political landscape of Sierra Leone enters a delicate new chapter. While the immediate threat of legal turmoil has passed, all eyes remain on how his physical presence will influence the country’s upcoming political dynamics.
