An eight-year-old girl has died and several others sustained injuries after a commercial bus carrying 14 passengers crashed and overturned along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway in Awka, Anambra State. The accident occurred on Sunday near the Anabel Event Centre as the bus, popularly known as “TRACAS,” was travelling from Nnewi to Enugu.
The Anambra State Fire Service said its personnel quickly arrived at the scene, secured the area and rescued and evacuated the injured passengers to a hospital for treatment. The service, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Media and Publicity Unit, said the bus was damaged but did not catch fire, while the deceased girl was confirmed dead at the scene.
Firefighters remained at the scene until the situation was brought under control and the road was declared safe, withdrawing at about 5:45pm. The service urged motorists to avoid speeding, remain vigilant and exercise caution, particularly when transporting passengers, to prevent further road tragedies.
