ABUJA — The Federal Government announced that Nigerian students will receive 100MB of free daily data starting October 1, 2026 to access approved educational platforms without cost.
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa revealed this on Thursday during the launch of the zero-rated educational access initiative in Abuja.
Scope and Impact
Collaborating with the NCC and telecom operators via ALTON, the initial phase targets five million learners in public senior secondary and tertiary institutions.
Minister Alausa noted that the 100MB daily allocation amounts to roughly 15 billion megabytes monthly, valued at an estimated ₦180 billion annually.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Aimed at removing high data costs as a barrier for low-income households, the scheme turns mobile devices into digital classrooms with backing from major networks like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom.
Stemming from a directive by President Bola Tinubu, the project seeks to expand broadband connectivity and support future transitions toward computer-based testing for national exams.
