Zero Tolerance: Lagos Court Jails 53-Year-Old Resident for Illegal Waste Disposal

A Lagos court has sentenced a 53-year-old woman, identified as Nelly Monday, to one month in prison after she was allegedly found guilty of disposing of waste in a drainage channel.

Tripod times reports that Nelly was apprehended in the Meiran area of Lagos on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after allegedly throwing refuse into a drain while it was raining.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in a statement issued on Thursday, said the woman was taken before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following her plea, the court convicted and sentenced her to one month in prison.

LAWMA reiterated that dumping waste in drainage channels and other prohibited areas constitutes an environmental offence and is punishable under Lagos State law.

They described such acts as environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law.

It said, “The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

“Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels.”

The agency also said it would continue working alongside relevant enforcement bodies to track down and prosecute individuals who violate environmental regulations.

Residents were consequently advised to use approved waste disposal channels and refrain from practices that could block waterways and worsen flooding.

The prosecution comes as authorities intensify efforts to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and prevent the obstruction of drainage systems across Lagos.
