The Ogun State government has released a new flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging people in vulnerable communities to move to safer areas.
Tripod times reports that Mr. Ola Oresanya, Commissioner for Environment, announced the alert in a statement sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
According to Oresanya, the warning followed a forecast from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) which listed Ogun among states likely to record heavy rainfall this year.
He noted that during the first phase of the rains from mid-March to July, the state recorded heavy downpours and isolated flash floods, though the impact was relatively minor.
The commissioner added that focus has been placed on key rivers and waterways such as the Sokori River and its tributaries, Opa-Aro, Adiyan, Eruwuru, Yemule, Gbogidi Canal, and the Ijamido rivers and streams.
“The state is projected to experience intense rainfall averaging about 360 mm during the month.
“The rainfall in inland parts of the state is expected to decline from October into early November,” he said.
Oresanya cautioned that the coming weeks could see river and coastal flooding in some areas due to extended rains, planned releases from Oyan Dam, and tidal changes.
He specifically advised residents of Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute and Warewa, as well as some parts of Abeokuta, to stay alert and relocate when necessary.
“The advisory also covers coastal communities including Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara and Igele in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area; Ebute-Imobi in Ijebu East Local Government Area; Tungeji Island and Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area; and communities located along the floodplains of the Ilo and Iju Rivers,” he said.
The government stressed that early warnings and prompt action are essential to reducing the impact of possible flooding.
