Flood Alert -Ogun Advises Residents In vulnerable Areas To Relocate

‎

‎The Ogun State government has released a new flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging people in vulnerable communities to move to safer areas.

Tripod times reports that ‎Mr. Ola Oresanya, Commissioner for Environment, announced the alert in a statement sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

‎According to Oresanya, the warning followed a forecast from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) which listed Ogun among states likely to record heavy rainfall this year.

‎He noted that during the first phase of the rains from mid-March to July, the state recorded heavy downpours and isolated flash floods, though the impact was relatively minor.

‎The commissioner added that focus has been placed on key rivers and waterways such as the Sokori River and its tributaries, Opa-Aro, Adiyan, Eruwuru, Yemule, Gbogidi Canal, and the Ijamido rivers and streams.

‎“The state is projected to experience intense rainfall averaging about 360 mm during the month.

‎“The rainfall in inland parts of the state is expected to decline from October into early November,” he said.

‎Oresanya cautioned that the coming weeks could see river and coastal flooding in some areas due to extended rains, planned releases from Oyan Dam, and tidal changes.

‎He specifically advised residents of Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute and Warewa, as well as some parts of Abeokuta, to stay alert and relocate when necessary.

‎“The advisory also covers coastal communities including Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara and Igele in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area; Ebute-Imobi in Ijebu East Local Government Area; Tungeji Island and Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area; and communities located along the floodplains of the Ilo and Iju Rivers,” he said.

‎The government stressed that early warnings and prompt action are essential to reducing the impact of possible flooding.
