Nigerians can now check their home addresses and obtain digital postcodes through the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introduced by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). Launched nationwide on October 1, 2026, the system assigns an 11-character alphanumeric code to each addressable building to improve location identification and make it easier to share precise addresses. Users can access the platform through the official website, postcode.gov.ng, and select the “Find my postcode” option. The website also provides information on the NIPOST Postcode application, with the Android version available on Google Play and the iOS version listed as coming soon.
To find a digital postcode, users should enter their house number, street name, neighbourhood or another relevant location detail in the search field. Searches can also be conducted using place names, existing postcodes and aliases, where available. After selecting a result, users should inspect the map to ensure the location corresponds to their building by checking nearby roads, neighbouring properties and recognisable landmarks. Those searching from home or nearby can enable their phone’s location service, grant the application location access and use the “Find My Postcode” feature to identify their building and retrieve its assigned code.
The platform may also display homeowners’ names where properties are commonly identified by their owners. NIPOST Postmaster-General Tola Odeyemi explained that officials collected both standard and informal building addresses during field data gathering. In communities where streets and buildings lack formal numbering, residents may identify properties using their owners’ names. Users can therefore inspect the address description linked to their building or search for a name commonly associated with the property. However, the absence of a name in search results does not necessarily mean the building is missing, as the postcode identifies the building rather than its owner or occupants.
Where a building’s details are incorrect or its postcode is missing, users can submit a correction or request a new postcode through the website or application by providing relevant address and location details. A Google Maps link can also help identify the property, while NIPOST reviews submissions before updating its records. The digital postcode identifies a building or addressable location, meaning residents of the same building can share the code alongside their regular written address. The system is intended to support deliveries, logistics, emergency response and public service delivery, while finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free, according to the official platform. Residents are advised to confirm that the mapped building matches their intended address before using or sharing its code.
