A man identified simply as Seyi has been killed by suspected cultists who allegedly mistook him for a member of a rival group at Ijako Market, Owode-Ijako, Ogun State. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, when suspected cultists stormed the market in search of a rival identified as Dammy.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment on the matter, said Seyi was shot by the attackers. The source said the incident occurred behind the market and was allegedly linked to the drug trade. The source added that the police had commenced investigation and were making efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, said the attackers had targeted Dammy before killing Seyi. The platform alleged that the victim was also attacked with an axe after he was shot.
According to the platform, the attackers allegedly identified themselves as NBM members and shouted “Aye Axemen” before mentioning Dammy’s name. It said people initially believed Dammy had been killed until they saw the body and realised that the victim was Seyi.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said he was not aware of the incident. He, however, promised to make enquiries and revert, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing the report.
