Nigeria’s footprint in global nuclear governance has received a massive boost following a major appointment at the United Nations.
Tripod Times reports that the Country’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria, Dr. Fatima Florence Ajimobi, has been appointed as the country’s Governor on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2026–2028 term.
The high-profile appointment follows Nigeria’s successful election into the influential 35-member global board. The election took place during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference held in Vienna, Austria.
By this appointment, Ambassador Ajimobi—who is the wife of the late former Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi—will sit at the nerve center of the UN nuclear watchdog’s principal policymaking organ. Her media office in Ibadan confirmed that she will actively articulate and advance Nigeria’s positions on nuclear safety, security, safeguards, and the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.
Diplomatic experts note that having Ambassador Ajimobi on the board provides Nigeria with a strategic platform to deepen international cooperation. This will directly support national development in critical areas like advanced healthcare, agricultural optimization, food security, and water-resource management across the country.
