ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed that approximately 100,000 women across the state have directly benefited from the World Bank-supported Nigeria for Women Programme (NFWP), highlighting extensive economic intervention as a vital, strategic tool deployed by his administration to combat poverty and structurally strengthen local families and communities.
Tripod Times reports that Governor Abiodun shared these milestones on Tuesday at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, during a high-profile diplomatic meeting with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed.
Speaking during an interactive session that included several program beneficiaries, Governor Abiodun emphasized that Ogun State deliberately stepped up to take structural ownership of the NFWP initiative.
The primary objective is to grant grassroots women equal access to institutional resources, operational business skills, and sustainable livelihood opportunities that are often missing from conventional government support systems.
“We reiterated our belief that women’s empowerment must go beyond mere political appointments,” Governor Abiodun stated via his official platforms.
“It must provide women with the resources, skills, and opportunities to build sustainable businesses, support their households, and live with dignity.”
Ogun State serves as one of the pioneer states for the initiative. Since its localized deployment, the state government has officially exceeded its initial beneficiary target by 105 percent.
The structural success of the state’s execution framework has effectively turned it into a national reference point. According to government records, official delegations from more than 25 Nigerian states have traveled to Abeokuta to understudy the “Ogun Model” for successful grassroots women’s empowerment and economic scaling.
In her remarks, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed highly commended the Ogun State Government’s political willpower and calculated financial investment toward uplifting women at the communal level.
With the current phase proving highly impactful, Governor Abiodun expressed strong optimism that the Ogun-engineered implementation framework can serve as a seamless blueprint to expand identical, metrics-driven economic support to women across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
