ABEOKUTA — Medical services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, are on the verge of a total breakdown after resident doctors handed a strict 21-day ultimatum to the hospital management over unpaid wages.
Tripod Times reports that the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the federal facility warned that they will completely withdraw their services unless all outstanding shortfalls, omitted allowances, and salary discrepancies are settled immediately.
Demands for Deceased Members and Severe Workload
Beyond unpaid allowances, the doctors are demanding the immediate payment of outstanding burial rights and entitlements owed to the families of their deceased colleagues.
The association also raised alarms over an acute shortage of doctors at FMC Abeokuta.
According to the ARD, management’s refusal to grant annual leave to staff has worsened an already punishing workload, causing severe burnout and mental exhaustion across departments. The union is demanding immediate, sustainable recruitment to plug the manpower gap.
Stolen Valuables and Security Lapses
Adding to the financial grievances, the doctors are seeking financial compensation for members whose personal valuables were recently stolen within the institution. This follows ongoing frustrations over recurrent security breaches, theft, and burglaries targeting medical quarters.
The ARD noted that while they remain committed to patient care, the hostile working conditions, delayed training funds, and missing professional allowances have left them with no choice but to prepare for industrial action. If management fails to resolve these friction points within 21 days, the hospital will face an indefinite shutdown.
