A Kano-based fashion designer, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has embarked on a 120-hour sewing marathon in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
Basari, the Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, began the five-day challenge on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and is expected to conclude it on Monday, October 12.
The marathon is taking place at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano.
Tagged Sew for the Nation, the initiative aims to combine a record-breaking attempt with support for education and underprivileged children in public schools.
In a video shared across his social media platforms on October 1, Basari announced the challenge, explaining that he intended to produce school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds throughout the marathon.
According to him, the project goes beyond achieving a Guinness World Record, as it seeks to promote creativity, resilience, vocational skills and community development.
He also called on members of the public to support the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to inspire young Nigerians, artisans and individuals with ambitious dreams.
Basari is aiming to surpass the existing record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, reportedly set by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025.
However, his attempt will be subject to verification by Guinness World Records before any new record can be officially recognised.
If successful, the challenge would mark another milestone for Nigerian talent while using fashion and craftsmanship to support education and vulnerable communities.
