FG Eases Petrol Price Burden: NNPC Slashes Retail Margin For 30 Days, Sets ₦1,350 Cost Ceiling

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The administration of President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a major package of interventions aimed at softening the impact of high fuel costs on Nigerian households. In a press conference in Abuja, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has agreed to entirely forgo its retail profit margin for the next 30 days.

Tripod Times reports that this temporary discount, according to the government, will allow citizens to buy petrol at direct cost through NNPC retail stations, with explicit priority granted to public transportation operators to pull down commercial transit fares nationwide. Alongside the 30-day holiday on profit margins, the Federal Government is negotiating a stable landing or ex-gantry cost ceiling of ₦1,350 per litre with refiners and importers.

Under this newly minted mechanism, if the landing costs spike due to global crude volatility or forex shifts, suppliers will temporarily absorb the deficit and recover it later during market downturns. The administration strictly maintained that this smoothing framework does not mark a reversal of the 2023 subsidy removal.

“This is neither a subsidy nor a price control; it is designed to smooth prices over time rather than suppressing them,” Oyedele stated, arguing that predictability serves the economy better than daily price swings. The Presidency backed the policy heavily, noting that returning to blanket subsidies would risk crashing the local currency further and fracturing public revenues.

The sudden policy shift arrives under immense sociopolitical heat. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had just issued a strict two-week ultimatum demanding a swift reduction in energy costs, while political opposition figures dismissed the 30-day relief plan as a short-term political band-aid ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections.
