KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) has sealed the corporate headquarters of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) following the utility firm’s failure to settle its accumulated tax liabilities.
The enforcement action, carried out by KADIRS officials under tight security, saw the locks to the main complex secured and tax-compliance banners draped across the premises. According to state revenue officials, the drastic measure became necessary after repeated notices and windows for amicable settlement were reportedly ignored by the electricity distribution company.
KADIRS management stated that the enforcement is part of its ongoing, non-discriminatory campaign to recover long-overdue revenues from defaulting corporate entities and individuals within the state. The revenue agency emphasized that tax compliance is essential for the government to sustain infrastructure development and public services.
“We have given ample time for compliance,” a KADIRS official close to the operation noted. “Sealing a business premises is always a last resort, but the law must be upheld to ensure fairness to all taxpayers in Kaduna.”
Sources within Kaduna Electric confirmed that operations at the headquarters were temporarily disrupted as staff were asked to vacate the building. However, the company is reportedly engaging with the state government to resolve the tax dispute and ensure that power supply operations across its franchise area remain unhindered.
Further updates on the negotiation and the exact volume of the tax liabilities are expected as both parties meet behind closed doors.
