Presidency Clarifies Tinubu’s Absence Amid Atiku’s Criticism

The Presidency has responded to concerns raised by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over President Bola Tinubu’s continued absence from Nigeria, saying the President remains involved in directing the affairs of the country.

Atiku had questioned who was constitutionally exercising presidential authority after Tinubu’s three-week vacation elapsed. He also cited Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution and called for clarification on whether a written declaration had been transmitted regarding the transfer of presidential functions.

However, the Presidency said Tinubu has continued to communicate with officials and issue directives while abroad. It also stated that the President had delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at some official engagements, including the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Presidency further announced that Tinubu’s working vacation had been extended by a few days, with the President expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.

In a separate response, Presidential aide Daniel Bwala maintained that the President’s authority to govern is not limited by his physical location, arguing that Tinubu can continue to direct and administer government affairs while outside the country.

Tripod Times reports that the exchange has renewed public discussion over presidential authority, constitutional procedure and the administration of government during the President’s absence from the country.
