Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has sent congratulations to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election. Obi described the win as a major step forward for Nigeria’s democracy.
Tripod times reports that Obi made this known in a statement released on Sunday in Enugu. The statement was titled “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” and in it he said the people of Osun had “spoken with courage and exceptional clarity.”
According to him, Adeleke’s victory underscored the people’s constitutional right to elect their leaders and showed how citizens can influence the direction of governance through voting.
He noted that the governor’s renewed mandate reflected his dedication to the people, his concern for their needs, and the results recorded during his first term.
Obi also praised the youths of Osun for what he called their brave and peaceful protection of their democratic mandate during the tightly contested governorship election.
“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens remain alert, understand their civic responsibilities and insist that their votes must count,” Obi said.
Turning to the 2027 general elections, Obi called on Nigerians to stay informed, take part actively in the electoral process, vote, and most importantly, protect their votes at every polling unit nationwide.
He observed that Nigerians continue to face hunger, insecurity, deprivation and economic hardship, and that through their votes they have the power to demand real change and accountable leadership.
The NDC candidate further urged politicians to prioritize the interests of Nigerians over party interests, and to uphold peace, unity and the rule of law.
Obi expressed the hope that the experience in Osun would boost public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process and encourage citizens to remain vigilant and committed to building a prosperous, people-centered nation.
