Students to plant at least one tree from admission point till graduation
Tree planting is being considered as requirement for graduation in Yobe State University, as part of broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability in the ivory tower.
The Tripod Times reports that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Tahir, made the plan known while flagging off 2026 Tree Planting Initiative organised by the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, Faculty of Agriculture on Thursday.
At the event which came under the theme: Greening Our Faculty for a Sustainable Future, Tahir said under the proposed policy, all Undergraduates, from the point of admission till graduation, would plant and nurture at least one tree.
“Every student will be expected to plant and nurture at least one tree from the time of admission until graduation,” he said.
He said students might be required to provide evidence of the tree they planted and sustained before being cleared to receive their certificates.
“They may be required to show evidence of the tree they planted and sustained before they are cleared to receive their certificates.”
Describing tree planting as important to the society, the VC noted that trees absorb large quantities of water, hence prevent erosion and flooding.
According to him, trees provide shade, fruits and a green environment conducive to learning, while serving as natural laboratories for students of biology, forestry, geography and other related disciplines.
“I am very impressed with this initiative and sincerely appreciate the lady and the young man who initiated this programme. I also commend the Head of the Department for listening to them and organising this event,” Tahir said.
He directed the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management to collaborate with the Directorate of Works and Physical Planning to organise annual tree-planting competitions among faculties and departments.
The VC pledged that the institution would organize awards for the best-performing faculties and departments and ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
