A Nigerian delegation to the United States-Nigeria Joint Working Group has arrived Washington DC to discuss Nigeria’s security situation.

Tripod Times reports that the National Security Adviser, NSA Nuhu Ribadu, led the team to the meeting on Wednesday, focusing on counterterrorism efforts, progress recorded so far and the next steps in security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. This is just as a bilateral defence meeting is also scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The Nigerian delegation include Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye; Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele; and the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

Nigeria has been designated as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) twice by the United States government. First Designation was December 7, 2020, under the first Trump administration, due to severe violations of religious freedom and escalating ethno-religious conflicts. This designation was subsequently removed by the Biden administration in November 2021.

Again, October 31, 2025, President Donald Trump redesignated the Nigeria, citing mass-scale persecution and violence targeting vulnerable communities.

A Country of Particular Concern (CPC) is a formal designation given by the United States government under the International Religious Freedom Act to nations that engage in or tolerate severe, systematic, and ongoing violations of religious freedom.
