PAY TO STAY: NCDC Rolls Out ₦100,000 Weekly Stipend to Lock Down Ebola Contacts

ABUJA — In a major strategy shift to curb public health evasion, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has approved an emergency intervention package paying ₦100,000 weekly to individuals placed under isolation or quarantine.

Tripod Times reports that the financial incentive aims to alleviate the sudden economic burdens of isolation and secure maximum cooperation from tracked individuals as health workers race to contain an Ebola virus variant outbreak in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, disclosed that the stipends became necessary following widespread complaints from monitored contacts. Many identified contacts lamented that being confined meant losing daily livelihood, leaving them unable to provide basic food, housing adjustments, or financial maintenance for their families back home.

“We are already covering their physical accommodation and feeding at quarantine centers,” Dr. Idris explained. “However, many highlighted the crushing financial pressure their households face while they are out of work. This emergency weekly payment ensures they can comply with vital public health monitoring without confronting absolute financial ruin.”

Tracking the Index Case

The current health emergency stems from a confirmed case involving a 42-year-old woman who flew into Abuja from Uganda via Addis Ababa. After exhibiting severe symptoms like fever, diarrhea, and body aches, her diagnosis was officially confirmed by the NCDC National Reference Laboratory.

As a direct consequence of this imported index case, the NCDC has traced and placed 53 primary contacts under close medical watch. This targeted ring of monitored individuals consists primarily of:

  • The patient’s immediate spouse
  • Domestic staff working at her residence
  • Frontline health workers who managed her care across two separate private healthcare facilities before she was isolated

Bolstering the Defenses

Beyond cash-supported isolation compliance, health authorities are rapidly optimizing regional infrastructure. The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital has successfully passed emergency needs assessments to function as the central specialized isolation and treatment center.

Simultaneously, the NCDC has replenished its National Stockpile with personal protective equipment (PPE) and integrated an extra 500 specialized laboratory testing kits.

While a suspected secondary case reported in Rivers State recently returned a negative laboratory result, Dr. Idris urged absolute vigilance across the country. Citizens are strongly advised to practice meticulous hand hygiene, avoid contact with unverified body fluids, and cooperate transparently with official contact-tracing teams to stomp out transmission chains early.
